A Fine Line Between…

Wrinkling in the skin is caused by one of a number of causes including habitual facial expressions (but don’t stop smiling), aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration and various other factors.

Habitual facial expressions

A facial expression results from one or more movements of the facial muscles. These movements convey the emotional state of the individual and are a form of non-verbal communication. They are a primary method of conveying social information between humans. It can be almost impossible to avoid expressions for certain emotions even when it might be desirable to do so to avoid wrinkles.  A person’s face and especially the eyes reveal much about how the person is thinking. Specific emotional state, such as happiness and sadness, are expessed through a smile or frown, respectively.

Ageing

Aging is an accumulation of changes over time. Clearly, one of the most dramatic ways of seeing these changes happening to you, as an individual, is to take a look in the bathroom mirror. These changes are matched in a decline of many cognitive processes as one ages but it is best not to get too hung up on this. It happens, so get on with enjoying your life at where you are NOW. The future will race towards you fast enough and those wrinkles will get worse and there will come a point where you might just start ignoring them..

Sun damage

A change in living tissue produced by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to changes in the skin’s structure. A mild exposure to UV radiation will lead to the individual having a suntan. Whilst moderate suntanning without burning can lead to a reduction in sunburn effects from subsequent sun exposure, (due to the release of melanin in the skin) the tanning is still a result of direct DNA damage. When the skin is damaged by UV radiation such as this,  type I cell death takes place, and the skin is replaced. It is clear, therefore, that any sun exposure is not good for the face and suncreams should be used at all times to reduce these effects. Wearing sunglasses in sunny climates will also help reduce the production of lines around the eyes from squinting.

Smoking

‘Smoker’s face’ is a term used by doctors to describe the characteristic changes that happen to the faces of many people that smoke. The general signs are of an accelerated aging of the face, with a characteristic pattern of facial wrinkling and sallow complexion. I suggest that this alone ought to be enough to get you to drop the habit. If only it were that easy!

Poor hydration

Half of the population of the UK suffer from dry skin at some time during their lives. More than a tenth of these will describe their skin as extremely dry or very dry. There is little wonder then that one in six primary care consultations are skin related. The loss of moisture in the Stratum Corneum (caused by the depletion of natural moisturising factor, NMF) and natural oils in the skin leads to a reduction in the skin’s ability to absorb water. This leads to the formation of tiny cracks in the skin and further reduction in moisture content through to the Stratum Corneum allowing further irritants to penetrate deeper and draw out more moisture.

Whilst it can be seen that there are a whole barrage of events that can lead to a worsening of our facial wrinkles, there are many ways that we can ”fight back’ against these processes to reduce or eliminate them (at least for a time, anyway).

So, what might we do to start this fight?
